Alternatives to Bankruptcy

If you are in financial trouble, there are several alternatives to bankruptcy. It is important that when debtors consider these alternatives they investigate the companies and organizations to make sure they don't do anything that puts them in a worse situation. Keep in mind that some bankruptcy alternatives may have an impact on filing a subsequent bankruptcy if the chosen alternative option doesn't work.

The most common alternatives we will briefly discuss are out-of-court settlements, debt counseling services, and debt consolidation loans.

Out-of-Court Settlements
Instead of filing for bankruptcy, might want to consider settling your unsecured debt at a reduced amount with your creditors. Yes it is possibl;e that you do this by yourself but there are companies that will help you negotiate with your creditors. These companies will usually get a much better settlement because, well they know what they are doing and because of the much higher volume of debts that they negotiate on a regular basis with the banks, credit card companies and other creditors. Keep in mind that all these options can have a negative effect on your credit rating.

Debt Counseling Services
Debt counseling services can be a good first step in helping you deal with your financial difficulties. They can consolidate your debt into monthly payments and obtain payment or interest rate reductions on your unsecured debts. A major problem with debt counseling is that some people are in too much financial trouble and do not qualify for debt counseling as they won't be able to make the payments and repay all of their debt even under the best of terms.

Debt Consolidation Loans
Another option is borrowing against the equity in one's home to pay down credit card debt. This of course requires home equity and a careful consideration to make sure you are not putting yourself in a worse position. Not being able to pay your home equity loan could leave you in a worse position than not being able to pay your credit card debts.
