Identity Theft Prevention Starts at HomeDoing Something About ID Theft Every time identity theft makes the news, shredder sales go through the roof. This goes to show that the more people are aware of identity theft, the more they do to prevent it. Some companies predict that within the next decade, shredding your documents that contain your personal and private information will become a daily routine in most homes even more so than recycling. Being aware of identity theft has led many people to be conscious of and re-examine what goes into the garbage, the recycle bin and the shredder. Secure your Personal Documents If more people understood that their personal and financial information or identity had as much value as their jewelry, they would lock it up and secure it. The simple truth is that your identity is more valuable to an identity thief than your big screen TV is to a burglar. For example, an identity thief who steals your your SSN, name and address, can open a line of credit in your name and use that to purchase a better and more expensive television than you currently have. The identity thief may even add a digital video camera, home theater system and personal computer. Securing your personal information at home is the first step in the prevention of identity theft and fraud but it shouldn't stop there. Spread the Word on Identity Theft If you walk into a doctor's office or other place of business and a clerk hands you a slip with your personal information including your social security number, say something! Be polite and explain to that person and whoever else works there that you may be meeting that the way they are handling your personal information puts you and everybody else at risk of identity theft. If after your conversation you are sitting in a waiting room, tell the others that are waiting there that they are at risk of identity theft as well. If no changes are made, write a letter to your doctor, or the business owner who is neglecting to secure your information. Write your local newspaper or write an article in your blog. The more people are aware of identity theft and actually try to prevent identity thieves from stealing their personal and financial information, the less it will happen. Right now it is much too easy for identity thieves to get your information and it's people like you and I who must start the revolution against identity theft and prevent it from growing.
