Millions Affected by ID Theft Every Year

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a study that shows that close to 10 million identity theft victims are created every year in the US. Last year complaints to the FTC rose by fifteen percent showing that identity theft is on the rise. The cost to consumers is close to 5 billion dollars added to the cost to businesses of approximately 48 billion dollars.

  • Approximately 60% of identity theft victims reported that one of their credit cards was fraudulently used.
  • Approximately 20% of identity theft victims reported bank account fraud.
  • Approximately 20% of identity theft victims reported a new bank account was opened by an identity thief using their personal information.

Computers and technology gets most of the headlines and the blame when it comes to identity theft, however surprisingly most identity thieves use low-tech methods for acquiring your personal information. Identity theft can often occur when an identity thief steals your credit card, takes your incoming or outgoing mail right from your mail box, goes through your garbage, etc.. To prevent your identity from being stolen, be vigilant and make sure your personal information is secure at all times.
