Hospital Employee Scam

The Scam
There have been reports of identity thieves posing as hospital personnel and asking patients to verify or provide extra information. They may be wearing fake name tags as well as lab coats in their efforts to trick you. They might even get you to help them steal your identity by providing you an official looking form on a clipboard and asking you to fill in the banks. Their targeted prey, who usually are preoccupied with the purpose of their visit, easily fall victim to the crime of identity theft.

The Solution
Prevention and awareness is the key to this type of identity theft scam. Before you give out any of your personal information, make sure they are a legitimate employee and not an identity thief. You can call the floor nurse and ask him or her if the person asking for your information really works for the hospital. If they are an identity thief, they will most likely leave before the nurse even gets there.

In this type of identity theft scam, the identity thieves cannot get your personal information if you do not to give it to them.
