Mouth Cancer: A Painful Disease that can Strike

Author: Hector Milla
Date: 8/12/2005

Mouth cancer is a painful disease. It can affect your lips, tongue, cheeks and even your throat in a short period of time. The sign is a non-healing mouth ulcer or a red or white patch in the mouth.

This disease can affect anyone. It does not matter if you are a young or an old person. What matters is the way you are living your life. Many experts believe that mouth cancer occurrences are increasing due to drinking alcohol and smoking in large quantities as well as having a poor diet.

It is believed that people who drink alcohol and smoke are up to 30 times more likely to develop this type of cancer as opposed to those who do not smoke or drink alcohol.

The British Dental Health Foundation estimates that mouth cancer kills 1,700 people in the United Kingdom every year. 4,300 new cases are also diagnosed every year.

Since if diagnosed early, most mouth cancer cases can be treated successfully, it is important that people of all ages be warned.

Always remember that the best way to considerably diminish the risk of being affected by mouth cancer is to lead a healthy lifestyle, give up smoking, cutting down ones alcohol consumption, and following a healthy diet.

Regular self-examinations are also very important. You should visit your doctor or dentist if you notice any signs of persistent ulcers, lumps, or red or white patches in your mouth.
