| On-Line Casinos - Rags to Riches to RagsAuthor: S.A.M.Date: 8/15/2005 With the recent onslaught of on-line casinos on the Internet, gambling is at its highest level in history. What does that mean? How is this affecting our society? Let's skip the debate on whether or not gambling can for some become a sickness as severe as alcoholism. Let's assume it is... just not for you. So Who's Getting Richer? Do we really need to ask? Obviously the casinos are. Real or virtual, casinos are businesses with the sole intent of making a profit. Believe me, they make a huge profit. All casino games are built or programmed to put the odds in their favor. The only way you could ever bankrupt a casino is to rob it. If you play a game in a casino against other players and not the casino, like Texas Holdem, they take a percentage and make money no matter who wins or loses. So What of Texas Holdem? With celebrity and professional tournaments cropping up all over the air waves, the popularity of Texas Holdem has increased it to the level of a household name.
In games like Texas Holdem, you test your skills against other players at the table instead of trying to take money from the casino itself. This closely fits the definition of a sport which must be why ESPN regularly broadcasts tournaments. However, just like any other sport, you may be out of your league. It would get pretty boring to grow up playing little league T-Ball against the New York Yankees. Keep that in mind when logging on to one of the many on-line casinos. You have no idea who else is at the table with you. User Dude1234 could easily be Chris Moneymaker or another pro or semi-pro player. It would be nice if you could start out in a poker little league but that just isn't how it is. It is strongly suggested that you gain much experience using play money before you risk your hard earned real money. There is, however, a disadvantage to that. Knowing that the money you are playing with changes the way you play the game. Even if you discipline yourself to play the same way, it can get frustrating when others don't. So you will get some experience but you might not be prepared for a real game.
Walking Away a Winner Doesn't look too promising does it? You can walk away a winner if you leave with a big wad of cash but also if you viewed your losses as the price for the entertainment you just received. Setting yourself a maximum you are willing to pay, or lose for an evening, week or month, that will not make you feel like you have been robbed, ill or hungry. Walk in or login to a casino knowing that you will most likely lose your chips but that you will have fun doing so. Never think you are smarter than or that you can beat the casino. If someone tells you that you are gambling too much, you probably are. Have fun and enjoy yourself, gamble responsibly and you will always walk away from a casino, real or virtual; a WINNER!
