Quitting Cold Turkey

All smokers must recognize that they are drug addicts. Nicotine is a powerfully addictive drug. Once a person has smoked for a long time, the body requires a certain level of nicotine in the bloodstream. If this level goes down, the smoker will experience drug withdrawal symptoms. The lower the level, the greater the withdrawals. As long as any nicotine stays in the bloodstream the body will keep craving its full dose. Once the smoker quits, the nicotine level will eventually drop to nil and all physical withdrawal symptoms will stop. Cravings for an occasional cigarette will continue, but this is because of past psychological conditioning and no longer due to a physical dependence.

Cutting down on the number of cigarettes or use of nicotine replacement aids puts you into a continuous state of drug withdrawal. As soon as you fail to reach the minimum level of nicotine, your body starts crave and demand it. As long as there is any nicotine in your bloodstream, your body will demand its old level. Smoking just one or two a day or wearing a patch which is gradually reducing the amount of nicotine being delivered will result in you not achieving the minimum level, and create a continuous state of high drug withdrawal symptoms.

This will continue throughout the rest of the your life unless one of two things happens. One, You stop giving nicotine to your body completely. Within a short time thereafter the body will either metabolize or excrete the nicotine completely and the withdrawal symptoms will vanish forever. Or two, you can start smoking again and accomplish nothing.

Therefore, cold turkey is the quickest method. Once you stop smoking, the withdrawals will stop within two weeks. Once they are gone, you can be assured that your body will never need to smoke again. Then, to stay off you will need to remember to never take another puff because after all, like an alcoholic, you are smoker for life and even the smallest dose of nicotine can re-trigger the withdrawals all over again. So just stay smoke free, enjoy your longer life and never look back.
