Finding a Lawyer

References are one thing but the most important thing you can do while choosing a lawyer to represent you in your divorce is to listen to your instincts. You must be able to feel good about the person who will be representing you. You will share intimate and very private details of your life with this person so you must feel comfortable with them and you shouldn't settle for any less than that.

You should also feel confident that the lawyer and you are in agreement on how he or she will proceed with this case. The plan is important and you should alway be kept in the loop. If you don't feel confident about this when you walk out of the initial interview then go and find another lawyer.

Qualities to look for in a Divorce Lawyer
  • Pro-Active - Try to find a lawyer that is pro-active and initiate rather than wait for something to happen and react to it.

  • A Leader - Find a lawyer that is a born leader. A lawyer that will control the case rather than let the other party or judge. Warning: This does not mean stubborn.

  • Knowledgeable - Find a lawyer that knows the law and has the ability to use the law in your favor on the spot and when the time comes. Knowledge of the law and the ability to use it can control a judges decisions.

  • Credibility - Ask around and find out what other clients, lawyers and judges think about this lawyer. Credibility goes a long way in a court room.

  • Strategist - A good lawyer will always have a plan or strategy on how to proceed with the case in short and long terms.

  • Respect - Find a lawyer you can respect and that respects you and cares about how you feel and helps you through the proceedings.

  • Communication - Find a lawyer that communicates well with you. Will he or she return your phone calls or email's promptly? Will he or she make sure you are never left in the dark about every aspect of the case?

  • Bravery - Seems like a weird quality for a lawyer? Not at all. Many lawyers are afraid to speak up and loudly when the situation calls for it. Find a lawyer who is not a bully, but also not afraid to let a judge or other lawyer they are wrong.

  • Cost-conscious - Find a lawyer that makes you feel at ease that he or she will not spend your money frivolously.

  • Zeal - Find a lawyer that will pursue your interests with zeal and go for the gold.

  • Rational - Above all find a lawyer that is rational and will advise you properly and tell you what you should know rather than just agree with everything you say.
